Warwickshire Gin Resourceful Flavours

Distilled using a small batch method, in our Royal Leamington Spa Distillery, using a traditional copper pot, we are respectful of the traditional process, yet we are not defined by it. We are politely setting the rule book aside, allowing us to wade into all that is new and undiscovered in the craft gin world.

The inspiration behind our gin collection comes from our desire to capture a moment in history, developing flavours to truly represent the county’s own unique story, bringing our range of hand-crafted flavours to life today. We effortlessly fused our two passions , to create The Warwickshire Gin Company.

Leamington on Parade Gin

Price£37.00

Warwickshire Gin Leamington on Parade 1

We wanted to honour the magnificent Elephants who were brought to Royal Leamington Spa from Ceylon.  We have crafted a gin that is lightly spiced to reflect the essences and include the heritage of Sam’s Elephants, along with Ceylon tea, cinnamon and hibiscus.

Serve with Mediterranean Tonic Water and garnish with fresh lime.

The Story of Leamington on Parade

In 1850 Sam Lockhart was born in Durham, he was the son of a circus clown. Along with his brother George they became entertainers in the circus, in the guise of acrobats.  Sam was even shot from a cannon to entertain the crowds.

The brothers travelled the world looking for their fortune, they found themselves in Ceylon, now named Sri Lanka. Sam discovered elephants being taught to perform tricks by the local children, Sam was totally fascinated and enchanted by this discovery.

In a bold move Sam brought the elephants back to England and they settled in Leamington Spa, in between travelling the world performing.  Not only did they perform to the general public, but to Kings and Queens all over the world, including Queen Victoria.

It is said that the elephants used to bathe in the river Leam. Today the slipway they once used still remains and it has an official title of “Elephant Walk”.

Sam’s most beloved elephants were called Trilby, Wilhelmina and Haddie (known by many as the Three Graces).

Our gin echoes the regular sight of the elephants on parade in Royal Leamington Spa.

Pair with  Mediterranean Tonic Water and garnish with a slice of fresh lime.

Alternatively pair with Fever Tree Aromatic tonic & garnish with lemon or raspberries.

Warwickshire The Philosophers Daughter Gin 1

A beautiful gin infused with a selection of flavours that have been carefully chosen to honour the Daughter of one of the most revered Philosophers of the Elizabethan age.

Perfectly balanced with Rosehip Peel, Rose Petals, Apple and Cherries.

We are delighted to announce The Philosophers Daughter has won Bronze Award in the 2022 IWSC International Spirits Awards!

The Story of The Philosopher’s Daughter

John Dee was a key figure in the Elizabethan court, he was one of the most trusted advisors of Elizabeth I.

Dee was tasked with many requests, which led him to make many discoveries, one of which was the distillation of alcohol. Dee was a clever man and he had an enormous quest for knowledge.

Elizabeth I tasked Dee with discovering a cure for illness and the Elixir of life. This body of work would require an abundance of the best quality botanicals the English lands had to offer, most of which could have been found in abundance growing in the extensively lavish ‘Knot Gardens’.

Elizabeth I encouraged her nobles & courtiers to construct countless ‘Knot Gardens’ in order to entertain her and to equip the alchemists and philosophers with their quests. The most romantic Knot Garden of that time was the ‘privy paradise’ that Robert Dudley created at Kenilworth Castle, for a three week celebration to court Elizabeth I.

Dee’s daughter, Kathrine, would have carefully selected many of the botanicals for her father to fulfil his works and she supported her father until his death at the age of 81 years.

We have included rosehip peel, rose petals, apple and cherries to complement the flavours that would have been carefully selected from a Knot Garden, to create this sumptuous unique hand-crafted gin flavour.

Pair with Elderflower Tonic Water and garnish with pink lady apple to bring the true flavours to fruition.

Warwickshire Kingmaker Gin 1

To celebrate The Kingmaker we have used fruits of the forest, which would have been accessible and growing freely in the hedgerows of England at the time of his power. Fruits such as blackberries, elderberries, raspberries and raspberry leaf, feature in our Kingmaker Gin with a hint of frankincense added to create  quite a unique flavour.

Serve with Indian Tonic Water and garnish with fresh or frozen berries.

Our Award Winning Kingmaker Dry Gin has won a Silver award for Gin and Tonic Serve, and Bronze for Contemporary Gin, in the IWSC 2021 Awards.

The Story of Kingmaker Gin

Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, was born in 1428.

He was an English nobleman who was one of the most powerful and wealthy English peers of his age. Originally on the Yorkist side and then later switching to the Lancastrian side, he was instrumental in the deposition of two kings, which led to his nickname, ‘The Kingmaker.’

Through fortunes of marriage and inheritance, Warwick emerged in the 1450s at the centre of English politics. In 1453 The Earl of Warwick sided with his father and the Yorkists against Henry VI. He was instrumental in winning the Battle of St Albans in 1455, the first half of the War of the Roses (1455–85.) Later in 1461 he obtained the crown for the Yorkist King Edward IV.

Warwick wielded the real power for the first three years of Edward’s reign. He worked tirelessly to arrange a marriage between King Edward IV and a French noblewoman, which would secure France as an important ally. Meanwhile, the then 19-year-old King Edward IV who was enjoying the trappings of being king, began to assert his independence and would not be used as a political pawn. Edward spoiled Warwick’s plans by secretly marrying Elizabeth Woodville for love.

In May 1464 tensions between the two men mounted and The Earl of Warwick began losing favour with King Edward and so he began to fall sympathetic to the Lancastrian cause. In August 1469 his plot to crown Edward’s brother, George, Duke of Clarence, failed. Incredibly the Kingmaker defeated Edwards army, captured and executed the queen’s father and one of her brothers. King Edward IV was imprisoned for a period at Warwick Castle and was released in September 1469.

Warwick and Clarence both fled to France and there Warwick was reconciled with his former formidable enemy, Margaret of Anjou, Henry VI’s wife. Returning to England with Margaret of Anjou in September 1470, they drove Edward into exile in France and restored Henry VI on the throne.

Once more The Kingmaker was master of England. However, the triumph was short-lived and less than a year later The Kingmaker was defeated by Edward IV at the Battle of Barnet and killed when he was knocked from his horse.

To celebrate The Kingmaker we have used fruits of the forest, which would have been accessible and growing freely in the hedgerows of England at the time of his power. Fruits such as blackberries, elderberries, raspberries and raspberry leaf, come together to create a refined, classic gin, which we introduced Frankincense, to enhance the regal superiority of the gin.

Our Award Wining Kingmaker Dry Gin has won a Silver award for Gin and Tonic Serve, and Bronze for Contemporary Gin, in the IWSC 2021 Awards.

Serve with Indian tonic water & frozen mixed berries.

Warwickshire Peeping Tom Gin 1

We’ve taken our signature core of botanicals and gently spiced them up with star anise, nutmeg and cinnamon, treat for your taste buds.  Serve with Indian tonic over ice and garnish with a slice of lemon and a cinnamon stick for a touch of seasonal sass. Alternatively  Indian tonic and a liquorice stick for that cheeky olde sweet shop finish.

Do you know the story of Peeping Tom? It’s a cautionary tale indeed! The legend of Lady Godiva’s infamous ride through Coventry has been told and retold for centuries, so the facts are a little sketchy – but we won’t let that get in the way of a good story!

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin…

The first question one might ask is why a Lady of good standing would choose to ride naked through the streets? Well, the rather marvellous Lady Godiva was very unhappy that her husband, LeofricThe Earl of Mercia, put such a huge tax burden on the Coventry citizens.  She begged and pleaded with her husband to relieve the townsfolk of such exorbitant taxes, but her pleas fell on deaf ears.  Legend has it that she persisted with her cause and would not let the matter drop with her husband.  Her husband grew impatient with her dogged tenacity and gave her an offer that he thought she would refuse.  He challenged her to ride through the streets of Coventry naked.

He clearly underestimated Lady Godiva’s compassionate nature as she took up his challenge and ordered the people to remain indoors with their windows and doors barred.  They were happy to obey out of respect for her and what she was willing to do for them.   Lady Godiva mounted her horse, completely naked.  She loosened her long hair so that it fell freely around her body like a cloak.

She started her ride through a silent, deserted street – all windows were shut and not a soul was to be seen.  Only one man, the town tailor called Tom, was unable to resist his urge to gaze upon the beautiful Lady Godiva.  He peeped out of his window and watched her ride by – but legend has it that his crime did not go unpunished… Tom was struck blind! Some say it was heavenly retribution, others say that the people of the town blinded him for his audacity.

Lady Godiva returned to her husband a triumphant woman.  Her husband had no choice other than to grant her request and abolish the heavy taxes. An annual pageant is held in Coventry to celebrate Lady Godiva’s original route through the town.
