The Teasmith Gin Healthy Tea Leaves

OUR STORY

With a long held love for gin, we were encouraged by the emerging craft gin movement, and in 2015, decided to embark on our own journey to create truly bespoke spirits.

Seeking inspiration from our surroundings in rural Aberdeenshire, we made a surprising discovery that linked our corner of Scotland with the beginnings of the 19th century tea trade in Sri Lanka. In 1867, a gentleman called James Taylor from Auchenblae planted the very first tea plantation there, beginning a process that would turn the island into one of the world’s finest tea-growing regions.

gin the teasmith owners

Keen to craft a gin that spoke of our local heritage, we selected a handpicked, hand-rolled and loose-leafed Ceylon tea as our key botanical ingredient and The Teasmith Gin was born.

We produce premium spirits using a careful blend of finely curated botanicals and hand-picked tea.

Following time honoured methods and with meticulous care, we distil these selected ingredients in traditional copper alembic stills to produce memorable spirits that can be enjoyed neat or in carefully crafted cocktails.

Broich single estate Teasmith gin

The world’s first Scottish gin distilled with Scottish grown tea leaves.  This special edition of The Teasmith is distilled with 12 of the finest botanicals including rare Scottish tea leaves grown on the banks of the River Earn in Crieff.  When distilled, Broich black tea gives light aromas of honey and apple.  These notes have been fused with elements of the classic Teasmith profile to create a rare and unique Scottish gin.

Juniper, Coriander Seed and Orange Peel form a backbone to our profile but are combined with Broich black tea, Lemongrass, fresh apples, local honey, almonds and cinnamon.  The result is a rich and complex gin that boasts both a beautiful citrusy freshness and honey-sweet finish.

With a tea crop so small, only 1000 bottles are available.

Teasmith Broich Distillers Flush

The first 50 bottles which left the still have been hand-numbered and sealed, preserving the unique flavours of this one off spirit.  The Distiller’s Flush edition comes in copper foiled box complete with a small photo booklet and special hessian sack containing tea seeds.  This gives you the opportunity to try planting your own tea and join a movement of Scottish tea growers creating some of the rarest teas in the world.

Proudly distilled in Scotland, we selected Strathearn Distillery as our production partner.  Following time honoured methods and with meticulous care, we distil our carefully chosen ingredients in traditional copper alembic stills.  Our distillation process is a two-stage method.  We distill the tea leaves separately to the other botanicals.  Having been left to steep in alcohol, we gently apply heat to the still and begin to capture the complex flavours that our tea leaves release.  Beginning with soft floral notes, the flavour profile changes as the temperature rises, offering at first a bold, blood orange taste, and finally a distinct and lingering, minty sweetness.

Teasmith Gin Stills

Our other more classic gin botanicals are distilled collectively, placed in a vapour basket in the head of the still. The alcohol vapours do the work here, carefully extracting all the flavours to create a lighter tasting spirit.  This is then blended with the tea distillate to create a memorable gin that is both delicate and sweetly warming on the palate, enjoyable neat on ice or in a carefully crafted cocktail.

Teasmith Gin Owner Tasting

The Teasmith Original was created to be a quintessential classic dry style of gin.  To marry with the soft floral and citrus notes of Ceylon tea, nine other botanicals were chosen to give the spirit its unique flavour.  Below are our main botanicals and their distinctive characteristics.

Juniper Berries Botanical Juniper
Intense and complexJuniper berries delight the tastebuds with an assortment of wonderful contradictions. Bitter yet fresh, sharp yet herbaceous, our foraged juniper imparts a complex flavour that inspires curiosity in even the most discerning gin connoisseurs.
 Pure Liquorice Root
Sweet and saltyHarvested in the summertime, pure liquorice root cuts through the bold flavour of juniper berries with its peppery heat. Its natural sweetness is juxtaposed with its salty aftertaste, providing depth and interest. It’s liquorice root that gives our gin its slightly viscous texture.
Liquorice Root Botanical
Orange Peel BotanicalOrange Peel
Fresh and zestyAfter being left to slowly dry, orange peels release their warm and bright citrus flavours, with sweet oils extracted at an early stage of the distilling process. Fresh, juicy and zesty, orange peel brings a vibrance and purity to our gin.
Coriander
Nutty and spicyCoriander seeds are gently steeped to slowly release their characteristic nutty flavour. Spicy in nature, coriander also contributes floral and citrus notes, with deliciously moreish results.
Coriander Seed Botanical
Angelica Root BotanicalAngelica Root
Earthy and muskyUnassuming Angelica Root works quietly in the background to bring harmony to all our ingredients. While subtle in flavour, refined palettes will notice the woody flavour this botanical brings to our gin, as well as the slight dryness it creates.
Hand-Picked Tea
Refreshing and mintyThe jewel in The Teasmith’s crown, hand-picked Ceylon tea is used to create a delicate and minty drinking experience. We use only the finest authentic Ceylon tea in our gin, sourced from exceptional Sri Lankan growers. Naturally light and sweet, hand-picked tea provides our gin with a palette-cleansing finish.
Ceylon Tea Botanical
Grains of Paradise BotanicalGrains of Paradise
Fragrant and piquantMembers of the ginger family, Grains of Paradise are a well-kept secret amongst speciality distillers. We use this heavenly botanical to intensify our gin; their distinctive spiced flavour lingers long after you’ve taken your final sip.

The Teasmith is a truly unique gin, characterised by its clarity, simplicity and confidence.

The Teasmith Tea

The Teasmith has worked with tea consultant Beverly-Claire Wainwright to source a truly unique Ceylon tea.  Grown at an elevation of over 1000m and nestled in a small valley above the Ravana Ella Waterfalls overlooking Ella Rock and Lipton Seat, this hand-rolled tea from Amba Estate offers something truly different.

A rare tea that has been developed with meticulous care, using only the finest leaf and bud, to create rich aromatic flavours.  Production is tiny and is made entirely by hand without machinery in the same way that James Taylor produced his very first batches of tea 150 years ago.

Amba Estate was chosen not only by Beverly’s recommendation for the tea itself but also for its ethos.  It remains a working organic farm that produces a range of artisanal teas, coffees, spices and preserves.  Most importantly, the owners work with the local community to support a variety of educational, economic and environmental initiatives.

Teasmith Botanical Tea

Teasmith gin scottish tea

The Growers Edition collection was inspired by a new group of tea pioneers. Around Scotland, a determined group of growers are nurturing Scottish grown tea plants.  The progress is slow and painstaking.  The result is both unique and rare. The Teasmith creators were inspired to take this precious crop and create a truly unique range of gins.

Broich Single Estate is the first in this series, featuring 12 carefully selected botanicals including Broich black tea from the Broich Tea Garden in Crieff.  When distilled, Broich black tea gives light aromas of honey and apple.  These notes have been fused with elements of the classic Teasmith profile to create a rare and unique Scottish gin.

With a tea crop so small, only 1000 bottles were produced initially.  This collection is truly limited edition and we look forward to adding to it with a variety of teas grown right here in Scotland.

The video below highlights Beverly’s work creating The Scottish Tea Factory – a place where growers can take their harvest for processing and where the Broich black tea was made.  Bev also runs courses and tastings if you are interested in learning more about tea.
