OUR STORY

We are Paul and Cheryl, husband and wife and owners and creators of Stockport Gin!

Stockport Gin Fine Quality love of craft gins

We met way back in 2006 on a cold, wet weekend in Torquay watching our beloved Stockport County – or trying to anyway – the game was called off! Instead, we spent the weekend in the pub and the rest, as they say, is history!

PAUL

I had worked for an Architectural practice in Manchester since 2003. Not long after launching Stockport Gin, I realised I had found a new passion in life and made the switch from Architecture to Distilling.

CHERYL

I was running my own hairdressing business but as soon as we launched our gin there weren’t enough hours in the day, so I gave up my hairdressing career to oversee Stockport Gin full time.

We both love working together as our roles differ and we have both found our own places and jobs in the business meaning we compliment each other…and keep from getting under each others feet (mostly!). We both get involved in the distilling process, as it is something we really enjoy, but what we really love doing is getting out to events, meeting people and telling them all about our gins.

So, how did Stockport Gin come about…

OUR STORY

Stockport Gin was born out of our love of craft gins. Many happy years had been spent travelling around the UK, and further afield, and wherever we were we loved enjoying the local gins. It in fact became a bit of a hobby of ours and we always bought a bottle to bring back home and add to our ever growing collection! So what made us set up our own distillery you ask?! Well, whenever we went out locally in and around Stockport we always asked for the local gin but what was on offer was always from outside of the town. We always said to each other “Someone should make a Stockport Gin” …but no one did…so we did!

We had joked about the idea for some time but it all really started one Friday night when sat at home enjoying a G&T (or 5!). We had been planning for a while to extend the house and have a bigger kitchen. I (Paul) with my architectural background, had designed a wonderful extension which looked incredible, the only problem was that it turned out to be double the budget – so the plans for the extension were quickly halted!

The pot of money was burning a hole in our pocket now and the idea of making our dreams a reality and setting up a gin distillery were mentioned. Normally Cheryl’s crazy ideas are brought back down to earth by Paul but on this occasion we were both in agreement and in the blink of an eye the laptop was fired into action and a new company was registered! At this very moment, Stockport Gin was born! We woke the next morning with fuzzy heads and as owners of our own gin distillery!

Now the hard work really started. We immediately set about making plans for the business. Developing the brand, researching, learning, approvals, licences, recipe development and of course taste testing. Eventually, on 22nd March 2019 we launched Stockport Gin to the world and haven’t looked back since!

At first all of our gin was distilled in our garage at home but now, all of our gin is made at our distillery in Stockport Town Centre and we are involved in every part of the process. We use a 100l stainless steel column still to produce our gins and then each bottle is filled and labelled by us before being checked and sent out all over the UK.

We make our gin at our distillery in Stockport using our 100l still and we are involved in every step of the process from selection of the botanicals to making the gin, bottling it, sticking labels on and selling it.

One of our main aims when making our gin is that we want quality and not quantity which is why all our batches are made on a small scale by hand.

Every bottle we produce is marked with the batch and bottle number, so you know exactly which bottle you get from which batch. Every bottle is unique, but the gin inside will always be the same.

Alongside the main botanical Juniper, we put 4 of our other carefully selected botanicals into the still, allowing them to infuse into the base spirit. We then distill this whilst vapour infusing lemon, orange and pine needles to give a delicate citrus flavour and aroma.

Our Original Edition gin is a smooth, citrus forward gin with distinct notes of juniper alongside lots of earthy, foresty pine.

Serve with lots of ice, a premium tonic and a wedge of lemon or orange.

Our Twist of Lime Edition was originally launched as a limited edition gin, but it proved so popular with the public we decided to make it part of our permanant range. It is made using 7 of the 8 botanicals from our Original Edition Gin, but instead of orange peel we use fresh lime peel to give a sharper, zestier taste.

Our Twist of Lime Edition maintains the distinct notes of juniper and pine form the Original Edition but with a sharp and crisp citrus zest from the fresh lime peels.

Serve with lots of ice, a premium tonic and a wedge of lime.

Our Pink Edition is made with the Original Edition Gin botanicals and then infused with Strawberries, Raspberries and Pomegranates to give a fruity twist on our Original Edition Gin. Our Pink Edition is a traditional gin with not too much sweetness to give a good flavour but retain the juniper notes.

Our Pink Edition Gin keeps a good balance of the juniper and pine which bringing a refreshing berry sweetness – although this is not a sugary gin at all!

Serve with lots of ice, a premium tonic and some fresh berries.

Similar to our Twist of Lime, this gin was orignally launched as a limited edition gin for Christmas 2019, and was so popular with everyone who tried it we decided to bring it back with a new and improved recipe. We distill with fresh pink grapefruit and pink peppercorns then infuse afterwards with more pink grapefruit to give us a gin that is really refreshing flavoured gin that leaves a tingle on the end of your tongue.

Our Pink Grapefruit & Pink Peppercorn gin gives you lots of refreshing, vibrant citrus from the grapefruits, but not too much, with a hint of warmth from the peppercorns and touches of juniper too.

Serve with lots of ice, a premium tonic and a slice of pink grapefruit.

Stockport Gin Gunpowder Edition is our Navy Strength Gin at 57.1% ABV! The term ‘Navy Strength’ allegedly derives from a test the Royal Navy did many years ago, to determine the strength of their spirits. The spirit would be mixed with gunpowder and lit with a match. If it burned with a clear flame it was proof that the spirit was of sufficient strength (approx. 57% ABV) so that when stored on boats alongside gunpowder, if the gin was to spill onto the powder, it would still light if required!

It is an explosion of intense botanical flavours, with plenty of warmth, spice and forest pine, whilst still packing in a medley of citrus notes and staying true to our Stockport Gin roots.

Serve with lots of ice, a premium tonic and a whell of your favourite citrus fruit.

Our Sustainable Edition Gin was originally made exclusively for Selfridges – but you can now also buy it direct from us! We collect leftover orange peels from Selfridges bars and restaurants, that would otherwise be going to waste, and use these to flavour the gin during the distillation process. The gin is then bottled in recyclable glass bottles and even the labels we use for this gin are fully biodegradable.

Our Sustainable gin has notes of juniper and pine but gives lots of fresh citrus aromas and flavours from using the orange peels.

Serve with lots of ice, a premium tonic and a wedge of orange.

This limited Edition Gin, released in June every year, is specially produced to celebrate Pride. It is a wonderful gin that is distilled with fresh passion fruits.

Stockport Gin Fine Quality love of craft gins

A lovely, refreshing gin with juniper notes and lots of fruity flavours and aromas from passion fruit.

Serve with lots of ice, a premium tonic and a wedge of orange or lime. This gin is also equally as good when served with a premium lemonade and makes incredible cocktails!

Whilst your gin is distilling, you’ll enjoy another G&T as well as samples of our full range of gin whilst getting the chance to ask any questions you might have.

Once the distilling process is over, you will then carefully blend your gin before bottling it in a 70cl bottle and labelling it, having given it a unique name. On Thursday evening, the 10th Stockport Business Awards were held at Edgeley Park. Organised by Clarke Nicklin Accountants, the awards celebrate the success and achievements of the towns many businesses. Over 380 people were in attendance at the black tie event, including us!

We were shortlisted for 3 awards this year, which in itself is an incredible achievement for us. They were Most Promising Young Business, The Taste of Stockport and The Stockport Award.

We were absolutely delighted to win not only 1…but TWO awards on the evening!!! We won the Most Promising Young Business Award and The Taste of Stockport Award. We were up against some amazing other businesses in all the categories so to come out on top makes us even more delighted.

In one of our acceptance speeches, we mentioned the fact that we couldn’t have achieved anything without the help and support of all our friends and family, but most importantly the people of Stockport who have been behind us from day 1 on our journey. So once again, thank you to everyone!

Onwards and upwards now!!
