Sloemotion Distillery Joff by the hedge

Founded in 2002, Sloemotion Distillery is an artisan business creating great tasting spirits and liqueurs. We are based at Green Farm, in the village of Barton-le-Willows, just north of York and near to the market town of Malton, Yorkshire’s food capital.

The business began almost by accident, when a farming initiative to improve wildlife habitats resulted in an abundance of sloes. To Joff Curtoys, an ecologist by training, who had grown up drinking his father’s home-made Sloe Gin, an idea began to take shape and Sloemotion was born.

The fields, rich meadows, woodlands and especially the tangled hedgerows in North Yorkshire provided the inspiration for the business and are still at the heart of every decision made.

The biggest energy usage at any distillery is the still itself. We use the energy-efficient iStill. The iStill’s design, insulation and computer controls means, using up to 5 times less energy than a traditional still, our distillery is always literally (& metaphorically) cool!

Our Head Distiller Ian uses his experience and that of his team to review existing recipes and trial new ideas using our second smaller development iStill.

Istill vector and Sloe Gin - Making Our Liqueurs - Sloemotion Distillery

We forage at Green Farm and the surrounding countryside through the seasons for hedgerow fruits and botanicals to use in the creation of our products. Once gathered, we dry or freeze them to preserve and concentrate flavours for the distillation or steeping processes.

The business began by scaling up traditional kitchen recipes and techniques to make quality liqueur products. Today, we still follow those award-winning methods.

The core element of our liqueur making is macerating or steeping whole fruit in small batches over a period of months. This lengthy process, along with regular stirring, allows the product flavour to fully develop and mature.

Making Our Liqueurs - Sloe Gin - Sloemotion Distillery

At the end of the process, every batch is assessed for taste and colour. Joff is the key person for this but we all have to get involved now and again…. Sometimes it sharpens the mind!

We re-cycle, re-use and re-purpose whatever and wherever we can – we don’t like waste. Our tastiest use of re-purposing comes with our second-hand sloes!

Our skilful team have developed innovative recipes using the gin-soaked sloes (too good to throw away!) to make our unique and award winning Sloe Gin Chocolate Truffles and Sloe Chutney.

Waste not, want not.

Delicious and delightfully refreshing; our bestseller for a reason. Sourced from the Yorkshire Rhubarb triangle we experimented to see what this celebrated local product would taste like with juicy raspberries.

We were keen to champion rhubarb, and when expertly blended with our Hedgerow Gin; we found we rather enjoyed the results.  Unlike a lot of rhubarb gins WE DO NOT add sugar, ours is bone-dry; as a gin should be. A slightly sweeter tonic then brings the gently fruity elements to the fore.

Nose – green and fruity aroma, with a gentle sweetness mixed with juniper

Palate – bone dry with background fruit & herb notes, but with clear gin character

Finish – bone dry with subtle & delightful fruity notes

Juniper, coriander, angelica, orris & bay with six botanicals foraged from the farm and local hedgerows: crab apple, rosehip, elderflower, nettle leaf & wildflower meadow hay. Stones from the spent fruit from our sloe gin.

Fresh Yorkshire “Rhubarb Triangle” rhubarb & raspberries

Elderflower tonic, garnish with Raspberries & mint with lots of ice.

Sorted Food Strawberry Gin Liqueur – 50cl jpg

Sorted Food x Sloemotion Distillery are proud to present our Summer Special Strawberry Gin Liqueur with Vanilla and Black Pepper.

Aside from freshly cut grass (and nobody wants that in a gin) is there a more perfect or symbolic smell than ripe British strawberries in the summer? Turning a surplus of saved strawberries from last year’s bountiful crop into the hero of this drink, we’ve crammed basket-loads of Annabel’s Deliciously British strawberries into our Hedgerow Gin. Balanced out with some natural vanilla and a crack of black pepper to give the liqueur a warming savoury finish that is as elegant as it looks.

Nose – bursting with fresh strawberry and summer meadow

Palate – smooth, fruity and with a roundness of vanilla

Finish – subtle warming black pepper spice

Sweetness – medium sweetness

Juniper, Coriander, Angelica, Orris & Bay, along with six botanicals foraged from the farm and local hedgerows: Crab Apple, Rosehip, Elderflower, Nettle Leaf & Wildflower meadow hay, as well as stones from the spent fruit from our Sloe Gin.

Crafted to be serve neat over ice. But why not extend to a thirst-quenching summer drink by adding a splash into a dry sparkling apple or pear cider or, for a very special occasion, a coupe of English sparkling wine.

This classic juniper led gin was inspired by the hedgerows of North Yorkshire where we have abundant botanicals to add subtle tones and flavours. Initially, we were looking to make a gin to make better Sloe Gin and on the basis of what grows together, goes together we went back to those hedges for inspiration. We do make better Sloe Gin with it, but actually it tastes rather remarkable as a Gin too!

Nose – clear juniper notes underpinned by gentle floral, herbal & fruit tones

Palate – juniper dry, followed by floral and fruit tones including apple and elderflower

Finish – dry but with a delightfully light, fruity smoothness.

Juniper, coriander, angelica, orris & bay with six botanicals foraged from the farm and local hedgerows: crab apple, rosehip, elderflower, nettle leaf & wildflower meadow hay. Stones from the spent fruit from our sloe gin.

Indian tonic water, garnish with apple and thyme and lots of ice.

Following the mantra of what grows together, goes together we experimented with these two hedgerow staples; blackberries, the jewel-like, mellow, juicy fruit and the sweet & sour green apple, blending it with our Hedgerow Gin. Again, with no sugar added, this dry but fruity gin is a delight on any day and celebrates that perfect autumn fruit combination.

Nose – green & dark fruits dominate, but with clear juniper notes in the background

Palate – prominent juniper with strong fruity overtures

Finish – dry finish with subtle mellow fruitfulness

Juniper, coriander, angelica, orris & bay with six botanicals foraged from the farm and local hedgerows: crab apple, rosehip, elderflower, nettle leaf & wildflower meadow hay. Stones from the spent fruit from our sloe gin.

Hedgerow blackberries and green apple.

Sloemotion Sloe Gin – 5cl 50cl 70cl jpg

This is where it all began. Conservation work on the farm ended up yielding lots of fruit on the hedges helping wildlife; it also gave us an idea for a little business! Twenty years on we’re still making it in the same way; hand-picked, hedgerow fruit steeped in our own Hedgerow Gin with a bit of sugar – how our country fore-fathers have made it for centuries.

Nose – rich dark aromatic fruits and cherry, with gentle almond notes

Palate – velvety, rich and jammy, bold and beautiful, hints of juniper

Finish – sweet and dry, warming the cockles, as it goes by

Sweetness – mid-range sweetness

Juniper, coriander, angelica, orris & bay with six botanicals foraged from the farm and local hedgerows: crab apple, rosehip, elderflower, nettle leaf & wildflower meadow hay. Stones from the spent fruit from our sloe gin.

Hand-picked, hedgerow sloes.

Serve neat. Or, if you’re in a celebratory mood add a tot to prosecco, cava or Champagne for a Sloe Royale. Sloe Gin is also an ingredient in lots of classic cocktails, like a Charlie Chaplin, or the aptly named, Blackthorn. Or, why not try a Sloe Gin Negroni or Sloe Martini.
