Perth

Gin Distillery in the UK

Located on the banks of the River Tay, Perth is the capital of the Scottish county of Perthshire. It is also the administrative center of the Perth and Kinross region, and it is a royal burgh, now with the official title of city, with approximately 45,000 inhabitants.

The city is home to the largest campus of the University of the Highlands & Islands and several corporate headquarters, including energy giant SSE, Aviva, Stagecoach and Highland Spring. Perth is within an hour’s drive of seven of the UK’s top research universities and has one of the highest percentages of graduates in the workforce of any Scottish city.

With significant strengths in food and drink, tourism and clean technology, Perth is primed for significant international investment opportunities, supported by the council’s tailored “open for business” approach.

The city is also a great place to live with more places to eat and drink per head of population than any other Scottish city. Surrounding Perthshire is also the UK’s leading destination for adventure tourism.

Perth offers all of the strategic benefits of being centrally located in Scotland but without bearing the high land and property prices associated with other major cities. Businesses here enjoy a quality business environment in a beautiful setting along with unrivalled quality of life with excellent transport links to the rest of the UK and beyond.

Launched in 2019, Gatehouse Gin is a joint venture between Wyndham Duchally Country Estate and Tony Reeman-Clark, founder of Strathearn Distillery.

Strathearn Distillery is Scotland’s original craft spirits distillery, which focuses on the careful, handcrafting of many different spirits, from distillation through to bottling. The passion and skill that goes into the making of their spirits was brought to The Gatehouse Distillery and is reflected in the smoothness and intensity of their flavours.

The Gatehouse Gin design process was exciting. Apples, rosehips, gooseberries and thistle were explored in the search for a distinctive flavour. Over time, this has developed into Gatehouse Gin using local ingredients from the Wyndham Duchally Country Estate botanical garden and orchard.

Wyndham Duchally Country Estate sits within 27 acres of private parkland with the vast scenic landscapes of Perthshire on its doorstep. The country house hotel and luxurious lodges are a wonderful get-away-from-it-all holiday or short break location.

Built in 1838 for the Monteath family, the original manor house later became a hotel. In 2000, 55 lodges were built within the grounds.

Just 2 miles from Gleneagles, Wyndham Duchally Country Estate is a great place to enjoy golf and of course, Gatehouse Gin.

Ideal served as an aperitif with tonic water. If you’re feeling adventurous, it’s great in a cocktail, too.

Distilled with 12 botanicals sourced from Duchally Country Estate and the local area. The signature botanicals are juniper, red sweet apples and gooseberry, providing a sweet and refreshing hit to the palette.

How The Gin Is Made

Gatehouse Gin is distilled in a pair of traditional 100 Litre copper alembic stills which are direct fired. The botanics are added to the body of the still with neutral alcohol and then immediately fired to avoid any loss of freshness.

Distilling slowly, the gin is collected at an average strength of 75% ABV which is then reduced to bottling strength with the addition of local distilled water.

The rest is a secret!

Tasting Notes

Nose: The almost gentle pine nose of a juniper led gin quickly gives way to hints of fruit and citrus. There is an overarching aroma of freshness.

Taste and mouthfeel: Smooth and sweet despite being a full-strength spirit. The sweetness coming both from the slowly distilled alcohol and the use of fresh apples and rosehip. The balancing tang comes from the gooseberry and galangal. Like all good gins, there is a hint of citrus.

Afterwards: Citrus afternotes, almost orange in flavour, are provided by the lemongrass and fresh pink grapefruit.

Thursdays at 6pm
£25 per person

Our gin tastings will take place in our very own distillery, or our cosy bar depending on the weather, and each session will commence with a brief introduction how Gin Gatehouse began and the art of distillation. We then get the taste buds flowing with a carefully selected tasting sequence, including a taste of our own Gatehouse Gin. We will talk the guests through the tasting sequence and teach them about the botanicals in each gin. This Gin tasting includes a Gatehouse Gin & Tonic as a well as 4 measures of carefully selected gins. The experience lasts approximately 1 hour and is available for a maximum of 12 people.

Pictured is Helen Stewart from near Pitlochry who has started her own Gin Distillery called Badvo using spring water and locally sourced botanicals from her farm.. Date July 2016.

On the 7th of July 1599, the Stewart family established. Badvo hill farm outside Pitlochry in Perthshire. Valued for its plentiful fresh spring water and biodiversity the farm has stayed in the family to this day. The farm was previously a site of distilling as spirit was produced in farm cooperatives in the 1700s as detailed in the family distilling handbook. The Stewarts were actively involved in the cooperatives that established the distilleries local to Pitlochry, and today malting floors, pagoda/cupola chimnies, and other distillery features can still be found in the farms that the family previously ran.

At 18 years old Helen Stewart started working at a local distillery and fell in love with the Scottish Spirits industry. She went on to spend three years collecting funding for the distillery, designing the gin, and renovating the building, whilst she completed her degree in English Literature and Language. Upon discovering her heritage in distilling through the family distilling handbook she wrote her dissertation in The Linguistic Legacy Illicit Distillation left in Whisky and Gin. She came home to open Badvo Distillery in 2018.

Badvo Gin is made using 100% hand foraged Scottish botanicals, including juniper, which grows extensively on the family’s Pitlochry farm land. Key botanicals include nettles and wild mint giving the gin a crisp, fresh and herbal taste.

There are seven different expressions in the Persie Distillery gin range – all built to be enjoyed neat, with tonic or a variety of mixers, and in cocktails.

The Distillery Originals range has three flavour profiles – fruity, savoury and sweet – the styles that prove consistently most popular at tastings. Zesty Citrus is sharply fruity, chock-full of limes and oranges; Herby & Aromatic is dry and savoury, with rosemary, basil, bay leaves and olives; and Sweet & Nutty Old Tom is full-bodied and creamy, with fresh vanilla pods, almonds and a hint of root ginger. We think of it as a starter, main course and pudding in gin!

We have chosen PADS dog rescue as our dedicated charity partner and are committed to raising funds to rehome abandoned dogs through a series of ‘dog gins’ – where the breed is reflected in the gin! The range includes Labrador Gin (traditional and mellow), Spaniel Gin (lively and spicy), and Dachshund Gin Liqueur (sweet and sharp)! For every bottle sold, £1 is donated to PADS.

We also have a special edition, Dog Days, which is our cross-breed gin as it is a mix of the three breeds!

“I didn’t plan on becoming a preachy craft gin geek. Yet here I am.”

The husband-and-wife team behind Persie Distillery is Simon and Chrissie Fairclough. In 2013 they launched Gin Club Scotland – the world’s first touring gin club – with the sole purpose of hearing the voice of the customer. The game-plan? To use these insights to make a gin that hit the spot.

And that’s what they did. After one year, they harvested feedback from 3,000 gin tasters and found three styles of gin were consistently most popular: fruity, savoury and sweet. So recipe development started in earnest, and – in May 2016 – Persie’s Distillery Originals range was born: Zesty Citrus Gin; Herby & Aromatic Gin; and Sweet & Nutty Old Tom Gin.

These award-winning gins are hand-crafted in small batches on the site of the former Persie Hotel at the foot of Glenshee in Highland Perthshire. Dubbed Phil the Still, the 230 litre copper pot still is a thing of beauty, and the first in Scotland from Müller in Germany. In August the same year the distillery opened to the public and now opens its doors for drop-ins and liquid tours throughout the year.
