Paisley

Gin Distillery in the UK

Paisley, large burgh (town) and industrial centre, Renfrewshire council area and historic county, west-central Scotland, 7 miles (11 km) west of Glasgow. It is situated on the River White Cart, a tributary of the River Clyde.

Paisley developed as a village clustered around a Cluniac abbey founded in 1163. The original abbey was burned down in 1307, and the present building dates from the 15th century.

By the early 18th century Paisley had developed into a manufacturing centre for the hand-loom weaving of linen. At the end of the century the new town was laid out over much of the ground that once belonged to the abbey. Paisley became famous for its Paisley shawls in silk and cotton (and later in wool), which were copies of the Asian shawls sent by British soldiers serving in India. A priceless collection is on exhibit in the Paisley Museum and Art Galleries. Later the manufacture of linen thread gave way to that of cotton, and Paisley grew rapidly. Paisley’s workers were noted for their radical politics.

Tear drop gin

Couple launch Tear Drop gin after feeling Paisley Buddies were missing out not having their own distinctive spirit.

For decades, Paisley had a close bond with the whisky industry as the global headquarters and bottling plant of Chivas Brothers.

Chivas is now history after bailing out to Dumbarton and a corporate HQ in Glasgow’s West End.

Now, there’s a new liquor in town – and it’s dedicated to Buddies.

Tear Drop is a premium craft gin in a bottle so fancy that some buyers are turning them into table lamps.

The first two production runs totalling 700 bottles are almost a sellout, with a third run of the special brew taking place at the Highland distillery. (Daily record).

We wanted to create a traditional gin to reflect Paisley’s historical roots. But with the addition of two extra ingredients which remind us of growing up in our hometown…brambles and rowan berries.

Summers spent picking wild brambles from anywhere we could find them…mainly the Gleniffer Braes.
The look, smell and taste of those bramble berries still bring back fond memories of many a happy day.
A huge rowan tree stood in our back garden, next to the shed…reminiscing many a great berry fight! It is easy to close our eyes and recall the vivid red colour of the bunched berries and the scent of them left on our fingertips.

With the help `and guidance from the award winning Pete and Rich at Lost Loch Spirits in Aboyne, Tear Drop Gin was created.

The Story of Buddies Gin: Q&A with Director David Montgomery – Buddies Gin

Buddies Gin Owner

As many people experienced, lockdown led to boredom, frustration, time on our hands, and an opportunity to think about our business in more detail. Every Friday afternoon, my business partner and I would have an online call to discuss our upcoming plans. Naturally, this was accompanied with a G&T… or two. One evening, we went off on a tangent and forgot to discuss business (these things happen sometimes). Instead, we started chatting about our favourite gins and where they came from. As two Paisley Buddies, and life-long St. Mirren fans, we realised Paisley didn’t have its own gin yet and we weren’t happy about it… So, the idea for creating our own Paisley gin began to brew.

Perhaps the most famous legal case in history, the ‘Paisley Snail’ is the story of a horrified Mrs Donoghue who believed she found a decomposed snail in her drink. After becoming ill, she sued the ginger beer manufacturer, Mr Stevenson, and changed the law forever – although the snail was never found.

*Unlike Mrs Donoghue, you won’t find a snail in this bottle.

Tasting Notes

“A refreshing minty fresh gin with intense top notes of woody pine. The body is fragrant herbs with a spoonful of sweet marmalade. A long, clean and crisp finish with a pinch of cracked black pepper.”

The father and son team behind 2029 Bridges Gin wanted to make something that was different but traditional yet with a modern twist, great to drink this with ice and a splash of tonic, savouring the smooth flavours.

Why the number 2029? Well, there are 2029 bridges in Scotland and they wanted to make a Scottish gin, not a Glasgow or Edinburgh gin. They picked 4 bridges to be on the bottle – Skye Bridge (North), Forth Bridge (East), Devorgilla Bridge (South), and Clyde Arc Bridge (West).

As this was a Father and Son creation, It made their relationship stronger, and like bridges, it takes time to build but when completed they are what brings people together.

Inspirited

The team behind Inspirited worked in partnership with ABT (Allied Beverage Tanks) based in Chicago to design their unique still. After a lengthy design phase the team finally created their still which is entirely tailored to their requirements.

Inspirited offer a bespoke gin making service, along with their Inspirited Original Dry Gin and other expressions. Customers can design their own gin based on an extensive list of botanicals, and the team then produce a custom-made gin that is of the highest quality. The customer can then personalise their own label to reflect their creation.

Ultimately fun and creativity is at the core of what they do. What makes gin so special is that no matter where your palate preference lies there is a gin for you. The team want to tap into this creative freedom and allow the customer to explore flavours they are familiar with and enjoy, as well as offer different and exciting new flavours which they may not be familiar with.
