Montrose

Gin Distillery in the UK

Montrose, royal burgh (town) and North Sea port, council area and historic county of Angus, Scotland, situated at the mouth of the River South Esk. Montrose received its first charter from David I of Scotland (reigned 1124–53) and was designated a royal burgh in 1352. It was there in 1296 that King Edward I of England accepted the surrender of Scotland from the Scottish king John de Balliol.

Montrose prospered as a market town and fishing port and by the 18th century had developed into a popular spa. The town has been known for its jute-processing and jam-making industries, but the production of goods and services for the North Sea oil industry is now more important to the local economy. The town, no longer a spa, is still a popular holiday resort. Pop.

Arbikie Estate is a family-owned working farm perched on the east coast of Angus; here crop is king. We painstakingly plant, sow, tend & harvest the fields that make up Arbikie. We are craftsmen of the soil.

This is an estate profoundly shaped by its environment: the red sandstone-tinted soil, the powerful sea and the turbulent weather give Arbikie a character found nowhere else. And here, situated where land meets sea, sits our distillery – created from an ancient barn, it is a place with all the ingredients required to produce authentic spirits of the highest quality.

Kirsty’s Gin is named after our master distiller at Arbikie, Kirsty Black, who carefully chose local botanicals to showcase our unique landscape and surroundings.

The kelp, carline thistle and blaeberries represent the elements of ocean, rock & land that surround our Scottish east coast farmlands, creating a wonderfully creamy gin filled with the character of Arbikie’s Angus home.

Meaning nature in Gaelic, Nàdar harnesses the power of nature and science to create the world’s first climate positive gin made from peas. A revolutionary spirit for the drinks industry, with a carbon footprint of -1.54 kg CO2e per 700ml bottle, Nàdar is at the forefront of fighting climate change and biodiversity loss.

Nadar Gin

ALL OF THE TASTE. NONE OF THE IMPACT.

Meaning ‘nature’ in Gaelic, our revolutionary Nàdar duo harness the power of nature and science to create the world’s first climate positive spirits, made from the most innovative and surprising ingredient – the humble pea.

With a carbon footprint of -1.54kg CO2e per 700ml bottle of gin and – >1.53kg CO2e per 700ml bottle of vodka, Nàdar is at the forefront of fighting climate change and biodiversity loss, avoiding more carbon emissions than it produces.

At Arbikie, we make our own base spirit, which means that we have direct control over the crops we use to make our spirits. After years of study by our Master Distiller, Kirsty Black, we concluded that peas were an ideal choice for the planet as the pea crop requires no nitrogen fertiliser.

THE SCIENCE

Crops require added nitrogen to support the necessary yield and quality of crops demanded by industrialised agriculture and downstream food-systems. The excessive application and poor management of industrially manufactured (synthetic) nitrogen fertiliser has had a negative impact on the qualities of our water, air and soils – and is a major source of greenhouse gases. Peas are different, they are able to meet their nitrogen requirement from the air, thus avoiding the need for such synthetic fertilisers.

The science Arbikie

Despite most of the air that we breathe being made up of nitrogen gas, it is in a form that is inaccessible to plants other than legumes. Legumes are able to take this atmospheric nitrogen, a renewable resource, and fix it into biologically useful forms through a symbiotic relationship with bacteria, which live in the nodules on the legume roots.
