Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

We are excited to share that we are now B Corp certified and joining the B Corp community, meeting the highest standards for social and environmental performance!

As a truly independent family business, Hayman’s is always about the long term and future generations, and we have been open about our journey over the past couple of years to become a B Corp.

This includes our reduce waste mission across the business and our commitment to be a low carbon company, reducing carbon last year by 23%.  Our team has been behind us all the way and this is just the start as we continue to move forwards and push the boundaries of what it means to be a responsible business and a force for good.

A great start to 2024! But this isn’t just about us – we know how much work it takes to become a B Corp so we want to also take this opportunity to raise a toast to all the other B Corps across the globe – what a fantastic community to be part of!

A big thank you to everyone who is part of this!

Our Story

The story of Hayman’s started way back in 1863, when our great-great-grandfather pioneered the distinctive taste of London Dry Gin.  Fast forward 160 years, and the London Dry style has become the most popular gin on the planet.  We’re still proud to put his original recipe in every bottle.

As an independent family business, we really care about what we make, who we work with and the people who enjoy our gin. Family is at the heart of everything we do. Our Hayman’s London Distillery is home to tours, cocktail masterclasses and more, but above all it’s where we make our great-tasting gins, distilling ten botanicals over two full days in gleaming copper stills named after female family members Marjorie, Karin and Miranda.

It’s also where our family history meets our future. This is where we innovate and experiment to find new flavours and expressions, such as Hayman’s London Light which offers a low alcohol G&T but with no compromise on taste. And it’s where we find new ways to make our business sustainable, such as sourcing renewable ingredients and reducing our carbon emissions. We are proud to now be B Corp certified, meeting the highest standards of social and environmental performance and committed to having a positive impact on our people and planet.

The Hayman gin distilling story starts in 1863 when James Burrough, a charismatic London pharmacist opened a small distillery in Cale Street, Chelsea (then spelt as Chelsey).

He experimented with a number of gin recipes, giving them names such as Burrough’s, Olde Chelsey, Beefeater and Black Cat. At that time, London’s gin of choice was Old Tom Gin, however James was busy pioneering a drier style that we know today as London Dry Gin.

James was the great grandfather of Christopher Hayman and the Hayman family have been distilling gin ever since.

In the same way as many a family business that has been around for more 160 years, the Hayman gin journey has been full of twists and turns – from global conflicts, prohibition and dips in gin trends. A major turn came in 1987 when the family business was sold. A disappointed Christopher promptly purchased back one part of the business so that he could continue the family’s gin distilling journey.

Today Hayman’s is based in Balham, South West London and only a few miles from the original family distillery in Chelsea. Christopher’s children James and Miranda now run Hayman’s -while sharing the same passion and affection for gin.

Christopher, Hayman’s Master Distiller, is often seen in the distillery, taking an active role in the distillery process and sharing his knowledge. In 2019, he celebrated 50 years of working in gin, which was marked by introducing Hayman’s Rare Cut – our London Dry cut at 50% – the perfect strength for a Martini – Christopher’s favourite cocktail.

Marjorie, Karin and Miranda. We have continued the family tradition of naming the Hayman gin stills after the women in our family…

Marjorie Still

Our 450L still is named after James Burrough’s granddaughter and Christopher’s mother

Karin Still

Our 1000l still is named after Christopher’s wife

Miranda Still

Our 140l still is named after Christopher’s daughter

The Hayman’s copper pot stills perform an essential role in our gin distilling process – allowing heat to be dispersed evenly and efficiently while stripping out any unwanted flavours and aromas.   These stills are at the very heart of what we do – in creating the bright and balanced, smooth flavour of our gins.

However, we are more than simply a gin distillery.  Repeatedly voted ‘London’s Favourite Gin Distillery’ by Trip Advisor – the Hayman Distillery where we make our family-made gin is where visitors can learn about our handcrafted, award winning spirits, enjoy a variety of gin (learning and drinking) experiences and purchase directly from our Distillery shop.

Our Distillery is a vibrant and welcoming destination for Londoners and tourists alike. Find out how to visit us here.

We look forward to meeting you all.

Meet our 10 Botanicals Haymans Gin

Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

At Hayman’s we’ve used the same botanicals and the same recipe for more than 150 years. Sourced from all over the world, these 10 botanicals are used in varying measures, depending on the style of gin we are distilling.

The correct oil content and individual flavours from each botanical is crucial when curating a precise aroma and taste. For example, the juniper berry has and always will be the most important botanical ingredient to our distillation process, as we feel that this is the backbone to a true gin.

However, the juniper must be supported by the fresh citrus flavours from orange and lemon peel, warmth from spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg and with earthy notes from angelica and a little sweetness from liquorice root.

Juniper berries

Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

Juniper berries are the key ingredient. We source ours from Macedonia and Bulgaria. They’re highly aromatic, with distinctive “pine notes” which distinguishes gin from other spirits.

Coriander Seed

Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

Our coriander seeds come from Bulgaria, adding a citrus note with a rich spicy and peppery finish.

Lemon Peel

Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

Sourced from Spain, lemon peel gives the crisp and zesty citrus characteristics to gin.

Orange Peel

Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

Our orange peel from southern Spain adds a sweetness as well as fresh crisp notes.

Angelica Root

Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

From Belgium or France, angelica root helps balance all the other botanicals and gives our gin its earthy dry quality.

Cinnamon

Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

Cinnamon from Madagascar brings a sweet spiciness to our gins.

cassia-bark-cropped

Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

Cassia bark from China is from the same family as Cinnamon but its more delicate flavour adds a light warmth and sweetness.

Liquorice

Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

Liquorice root powder from Sri Lanka gives deep warm and sweet flavours, whilst also neutralising any bitterness from the other botanicals.

Nutmeg

Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

Our nutmeg is sourced from India and adds a lingering peppery finish.

Orris Root

Haymans Gin excited to share B Corp certified

Orris root is the root of the Iris flower. It adds delicate floral notes and binds the other botanicals together, and ours comes from Italy.

B corp

As a truly independent Family Business and B Corp certified, we are always thinking about the future.

B Corp is a certification meaning a business is meeting the highest standards of social and environmental performance, and is committed to having a positive impact on our people and planet.

Achieving B Corp is no small feat, and it shouldn’t be. It has been two years of passion and hard work. A business must earn a minimum of 80 points out of a possible 200 to qualify. We are delighted to have achieved 89.2 points under the heading of governance, environment, workers, community and customers – a score we will work towards improving year on year.

Our Distillery is run on 100% green energy and we have a mission to reduce waste with a maximum of 10% to landfill and zero to landfill target by 2050.

We are a low carbon company with year-on-year goals with last year seeing a 23% reduction in operational carbon emissions.

A move to more focused and strategic charitable partnerships while supporting our community both within and outside of our industry with each brand having a different charitable focus.

It is a fantastic feeling to be recognised for living our values every single day and we are thrilled to be part of the B Corp community. Find out below what else we are doing as a B Corp:

  • Our Distillery is run on 100% green energy.
  • Our botanicals selected are renewable – some such as citrus peels are a bi-product of fruit juice.
  • After distillation, our used botanicals undergo a process which turns them into renewable energy & a rich biofertilizer for our farmers. Every tonne recycled in this way prevents 0.5-1 Tonne of CO2 entering the atmosphere.
  • The surplus spirit from our distilling and production process is re-distilled into Respirited Vodka.
  • Our Distillery Urban Garden is a place of tranquillity as well as a habitat for nature with our very own bug hotel for bees, ladybirds and butterflies.
  • All the bottles we use are 100% recyclable.
  • Our capsules are made from a recyclable material.
  • We use an compostable cork.
  • We offer a recyclable eco-refill box for our On-trade customers to reduce waste and glass usage.
  • The packaging for our online orders is all recyclable.
  • For us, community is our local community, the charities we support and the wider drinks and hospitality industry. Here are some of the things we do:
  • Support our local parks and wildlife initiatives, schools and hospitals through company donations and donations for fundraising events.
  • Local job creation through opportunities to support our Distillery team with our tours and University placement students to gain experience.
  • Partnerships with the charities we work with – The Back Up Trust who support people with spinal cord injuries, and The Drinks Trust who support our industry.
  • Educating the hospitality and retail industry through our regular Training Academy workshops at our Distillery.
  • Supporting the trade with the sustainable initiatives and goals through WSTA and Family Business United.
