THE START
Founders Liam Hughes and Mike Hayward embark on a mission to bring single malt whisky distilling back to the city of Glasgow and officially incorporate ‘The Glasgow Distillery Company Ltd.’ Named after one of the first licensed distilleries in Scotland. The original Glasgow Distillery Company was founded in 1770, subsequently operated under a number of different names, and produced unpeated, peated, and triple distilled single malt until its eventual closure in 1902.
The distillery begins to take shape and the mission of bringing premium spirits production back to the city has begun.

A HOME
A site for the new distillery is found on the outskirts of Glasgow in Hillington, and work soon begins on plans to construct the city’s first new independent single malt whisky distillery in over 100 years. It’s not a traditional setting for a distillery, but this will not be a traditional whisky distillery.

WORK BEGINS
A repurposed warehouse is utilised to house the equipment within; planning efficient use of this space is paramount and the shape of the distillery infrastructure starts to take shape.

POWER!
Our boiler is installed adjacent to the outside wall of the distillery; a powerful dual fuel boiler named the Wee Chieftan. The production is nearly ready now that there is a suitable power source.

THE FIRST STILL

The distillery welcomes the arrival of our first still – a 500-litre copper pot white spirits still, named Annie. Annie consist of a copper pot, a helmet for vapour infusion, and a 6-plate column.

Makar Original Dry Gin, the first product from the distillery, is launched. Juniper forward and bold, the name derives from the ancient Scots word for a poet or bard. Makar Gin is Glasgow’s first ever (legally produced) gin and is soon found in bars and restaurants across the city, the country and then the world.

Makar Mulberry Aged Gin takes our Makar Original Dry expression and matures it for a short period in small, handmade fifty-litre fresh casks made from the mulberry tree. The intense maturation period imbibes this spirit with a lovely light straw colour, a smooth and subtly sweet taste and a lemony citrus finish.
Makar Mulberry is an original and exciting gin that has twice been named Scotland’s Best Cask-Aged Gin.
We like to sip Makar Mulberry neat or with a cube of ice, however, it is also excellent when paired with ginger ale over ice, rather than conventional tonic water. Alternatively, try mixing the refreshing Makar Elderflower Gin Fizz

Makar Oak Aged Gin takes our Makar Original Dry expression and matures it for a short period in small, handmade fifty-litre virgin European oak casks. The intense maturation period imbibes this spirit with a wonderful golden colour, a vibrant oaky taste and a spicy finish.
Named ‘Scotland’s Best Matured Gin’ and awarded a Gold medal at the San Francisco Spirits Awards, this is an original and exciting gin that is not to be missed by gin enthusiasts.
Makar Oak Aged Gin is best paired with ginger ale, over ice, rather than a conventional tonic water mixer, but we equally enjoy Makar Oak mixed as part of the classic Negroni cocktail.

Fresh pine and smoky oak, rosemary and citrus, mellowed by soft notes of baked vanilla, warm spices and cinnamon.
PALATE
Bonfire toffee opens up the palate followed by soft juniper and herbaceous vanilla, with a hint of fresh coffee and dark chocolate.

Old Tom Gin is a traditional style dating back to the 18th century when illicit producers distilled sweet gin in public house basements. They advertised their wares with a sign of a black cat (or ‘Old Tom’). Money and a metal tube were inserted under the sign, and in return, one received a mouthful of tax-free gin.
Today, we honour this heritage by crafting our Old Tom Gin with a selection of sweeter botanicals than those used in our Makar Original Dry expression. Fresh oranges, almonds, and anise are combined with plenty of juniper (still a signature of Makar Gin) and other supporting botanicals. After distillation, we blend in a small amount of honey, giving this spirit a luxurious mouthfeel and a subtly sweet finish.

Makar Original Dry is meticulously distilled in our copper pot still, Annie. This process combines seven carefully selected botanicals with juniper at the heart of the spirit. These botanicals are symbolised by the bespoke seven-sided Makar Gin bottle and illustrated around the neck label.
As the first gin from Glasgow, Makar Gin has confidently led the way, earning numerous international awards since its launch in 2014. Enjoy Makar in a G&T garnished with a slice of mild green chilli pepper, or mix it into a Makar martini.
