THE ENGLISH HERBARIUM RANGE IS AN HOMAGE TO OUR ORIGINS, A JOURNEY THROUGH THE ENGLISH COUNTRY GARDENS

Our Story

INSPIRED BY NATURE

WALKS THROUGH THE MEADOWS SURROUNDING CAMBRIDGE INSPIRED WILLIAM AND LUCY LOWE TO CREATE GINS THAT CAPTURE THE TASTE OF THE ENGLISH SEASONS USING BOTANICALS GROWN IN AND AROUND THEIR HOME.

They founded Cambridge Distillery on the principle that no two botanicals are identical and as such, they need to be treated individually. To achieve this, they developed a unique novo-dimensional distillation matrix in which temperature, timing and pressure are just three of the nine variables that they use to tailor the treatment of each botanical. This means they can distill the freshest and most delicate botanicals and achieve a level of precision vastly beyond that of traditional distillation.

WE STILL HAVE THE SAME SINGULAR AIM – ELEVATE THE GIN CATEGORY BY CREATING OUTSTANDING PRODUCTS WITH THE FRESHEST BOTANICALS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.

At Cambridge Distillery, we focus our effort on gins which have never been done before or where we see an opportunity to greatly improve the quality of what is available. Every gin that we have ever released has won international awards for quality, and our unique philosophy have led to Cambridge Distillery being awarded three consecutive times as the most innovative distillery in the world.

Traditional juniper combines with fresh basil, rosemary, rose petal, angelica seed, blackcurrant leaf and the effervescent citrus finish of lemon verbena. The result is an homage to both our heritage and to the aromatic, sensorial delight of an English meadow at the height of summer.

Gin masters will tell you that to create outstanding gins; you have to use the freshest ingredients. They also use the ones in season. Guests who have been to the Gin Lab developed a better appreciation of their gins.

So don’t take our word for it! Go to the Gin Lab, and get more ideas about gins and gin production. Head on over to 10 Green St, Cambridge CB2 3JU.  An hour and a half stay are enough to visit and tour the place.  Don’t forget to bring your ID to show proof of age.

Did you say Gin Lab? Where you can buy gin, taste gin, make your own gin, experiment with gin, make cocktails with gin, and taste more gin? Cheers to that!

The Cambridge Distillery was founded by Will and Lucy Lowe and was the very first place in the world to offer people the chance to tailor a gin to their own taste. A truly brilliant idea, that caught the wave of gin obsession that started a few years back and seems to still be going strong.

The distillery makes their own wonderful gins  (every one an award winner) and partner with big names creating bespoke gins for the likes of British Airways. Anty gin – a collaboration with the Nordic Food Lab, is the first gin in the world to be made from insects! Every bottle has the essence of approximately 62 red wood ants, along with hand-foraged botanicals. It was named World’s Most Innovative Alcohol in the 2015 World Beverage Innovation Awards. If you’re not up for that one then one of the seasonal gins made from botanicals foraged in and around Cambridge and are truly delicious.

The distillery itself is in the lovely village of Grantchester  (with a great cafe too) where you can do walk-in tastings or booked masterclasses and experiences.  The lab and shop are on Green Steet in Cambridge centre. The Shop offers you the chance to blend your own gin with no appointment necessary, as well as stocking the entire portfolio of award-winning Cambridge Distillery products which make lovely gifts (for yourself?).

In the Tasting Room you can choose from a variety of experiences – Taste it, Make It, Mix It (Isn’t that a Spice Girls lyric?). For the adventurous try the intriguing Molecular Experience – interactive molecular cocktail making using scientific methods.  Molecular martini anyone?

The three bespoke gins that have been created exclusively for us perfectly reflect the expert craftsmanship, and unique stories, that define each of our restaurants.”

This extraordinary collaboration, several years in the making, showcases the unparalleled craftsmanship of Cambridge Distillery, co-founded by Master Distiller William Lowe MW, a true pioneer in the world of luxury gin. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, William Lowe MW meticulously selects only the freshest, seasonally available botanicals for his craft. Distinguished as the world’s only individual to hold the titles of both Master Distiller and Master of Wine, his steadfast dedication to quality has truly elevated the art of gin blending within the industry. William Lowe MW commented, “Cambridge Distillery is honoured to embark on this exceptional journey with The Peninsula London, where innovation harmonises with tradition, culminating in an exceptional gin experience that beautifully reflects the essence of both institutions.”

Little Blue Bar, inspired by the upper deck of the Keying junk, offers intimate cocktails inspired by Eastern flavours and is the home of Little Blue Gin.

Nestled on the ground floor, the Little Blue Bar draws inspiration from the upper deck of the historic Keying junk, a symbol of cultural exchange between China and London. It is here that you’ll find the home of Little Blue Gin, a tribute to the Maritime passage connecting East and West. This exquisite gin is a fusion of rare and fine teas, including white tea, lapsang souchong, assam, and pu’er, expertly blended to perfection by Master Distiller, William Lowe MW. The design of the bottle mirrors the captivating interior of the bar.

High above the cityscape, The Peninsula London’s rooftop restaurant, Brooklands, awaits. An homage to the golden eras of British aviation and motorsport, it serves as the inspiration for Mach II Gin.

With its sweeping outdoor terrace and restaurant featuring a scale model of the iconic Concorde, Brooklands offers a breathtaking dining experience. The automotive-themed bar, adorned with rare motoring memorabilia and classic race cars from the Brooklands racetrack and museum, sets the stage for enjoying this remarkable gin. Mach II Gin expertly combines juniper with quintessentially British countryside botanicals of blackcurrant leaves, rose, rosemary, lemon verbena, angelica, and basil.

Taking its name from the year The Peninsula Hotels first opened its doors in Hong Kong, 1928 Gin captures the essence of the hotel, seamlessly blending British elegance with Asian sophistication.

This exceptional gin harmoniously blends quintessentially English botanicals, such as delicate rose petals and aromatic lemon verbena, with the allure of Asian botanicals, including vibrant turmeric and zesty kaffir lime. The result is an extraordinary infusion of spicy warmth and vibrant citrus notes that define its distinct flavour profile. The Peninsula London’s signature Peninsula Afternoon Tea and timeless all-day dining classics in The Lobby restaurant provide the perfect accompaniment for savouring this masterpiece. The Lobby’s triple-height, intricately moulded ceiling serves as the muse for the 1928 Gin’s bottle design.

We highly recommend a visit to this exceptional hotel, where you can indulge in a lavish stay or explore the bars to savour these exquisite libations firsthand.

English producer Cambridge Distillery has partnered with The Peninsula London to create three gins for the recently opened luxury hotel.

The five-star venue, which opened last month in Belgravia, is the first British site from The Peninsula chain of high-end hotels.

The collaboration with Cambridge Distillery, said to be several years in the making, saw the creation of a trio of gins inspired by the hotel.

Co-founder and master distiller William Lowe said: “Cambridge Distillery is honoured to embark on this exceptional journey with The Peninsula London, where innovation harmonises with tradition, culminating in an exceptional gin experience that beautifully reflects the essence of both institutions.”

The first, Little Blue Gin, is inspired by the Little Blue Bar on the ground floor of The Peninsula. The bar offers cocktails inspired by Eastern flavours.

The 40% ABV expression is made with a blend of teas, including white tea, lapsang souchong, assam and pu’er.

Meanwhile, Mach II Gin is based on the hotel’s rooftop restaurant, Brooklands, which is inspired by British aviation and motorsport.

Bottled at 40% ABV, Mach II Gin combines juniper with botanicals found in the British countryside, such as blackcurrant leaves, rose, rosemary, lemon verbena, angelica and basil.

Completing the trio is 1928 Gin, named after the year The Peninsula Hotels opened its debut site in Hong Kong.

It is said to capture the essence of the hotel’s British-Asian influence by blending English botanicals such as rose petals and lemon verbena with turmeric and kaffir lime.

The 42% ABV liquid offers a ‘spicy warmth and vibrant citrus notes’.

Sonja Vodusek, managing director of The Peninsula London, added: “We are proud to be collaborating with the esteemed Cambridge Distillery. The business embodies tradition, innovation and British artisanship, all of which are incredibly important to us here at The Peninsula London.

“The three bespoke gins that have been created exclusively for us perfectly reflect the expert craftsmanship and unique stories that define each of our restaurants.”

Cambridge Distillery will also host a pop-up laboratory and shop at The Royal Exchange in London next month.
