Birmingham West Midlands

Birmingham is a city and metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of West Midlands in England. It is the second-largest city in Britain – commonly referred to as the second city of the United Kingdom with a population of 1.145 million in the city proper. Birmingham borders the Black Country to its west and, together with the city of Wolverhampton and towns including Dudley and Solihull, forms the West Midlands conurbation. The wider metropolitan area has a population of 4.3 million, making it the largest outside of London.
Located in the West Midlands region of England, approximately 100 miles (160 km) from London, Birmingham is considered to be the social, cultural, financial and commercial centre of the Midlands. It is just west of the traditional centre point of England at Meriden, and is the most inland major city in the country, and lying north of the Cotswolds and east of the Shropshire Hills. Distinctively, Birmingham only has small rivers flowing through it, mainly the River Tame and its tributaries River Rea and River Cole – one of the closest main rivers is the Severn, approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of the city centre. The city does however have numerous canals, collectively named the Birmingham Canal Navigations.
St Patrick’s Day parade to return to Birmingham after four-year break.
The St Patrick’s Day Parade is returning to Birmingham next year after a four-year break due to the pandemic.
The huge celebration will take place on Sunday 17 March 2024, which is St Patrick’s Day, and it will be in Digbeth once again.
The parade used to attract up to 80,000 people to take part, and was known as the third biggest St Patrick’s Parade in the world.
The annual event was last held in March 2019, but was cancelled through the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Birmingham Irish Association announced the return during the Pairc Festival over the bank holiday weekend, and they say they’re excited it’s coming back.

OUR CITY
Birmingham has been developing and growing for hundreds of years. The skyline captures The Rotunda built in the 1960’s and an icon of the City Centre Selfridges from the 2000’s. The Cranes are working on developments around the rejuvenation of Curzon Street Station as the City moves into 2020’s and looks beyond. In the foreground is the Grade II listed Brolly works built for Corder & Turley in 1872. Nearly 150 years of history from one small corner of our City.
