Tottenham Hotspur close gap on Champions League rivals with ruthless display.

Tottenham thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 to move within two points of their Champions League rivals, as Unai Emery’s side imploded after John McGinn’s second-half red card.

McGinn was sent off with almost half an hour to go for taking out Destiny Udogie when Spurs were already 2-0 up through goals from James Maddison and Brennan Johnson three minutes apart early in the second half.

Heung-Min Son and substitute Timo Werner scored in stoppage-time to punish Villa and claim a statement win, which closes the gap on Unai Emery’s side and swings the goal difference in their favour.

Villa are now at the mercy of Spurs in the race for Champions League football as they have played a game more. McGinn will also miss key games against West Ham, Wolves and Man City through suspension.

McGinn werd met nog bijna een half uur te gaan van het veld gestuurd omdat hij Destiny Udogie had uitgeschakeld toen de Spurs vroeg in de tweede helft al met 2-0 voor stonden door doelpunten van James Maddison en Brennan Johnson, drie minuten na elkaar.

Heung-Min Son en invaller Timo Werner scoorden in blessuretijd om Villa af te straffen en een statement-overwinning te claimen, waardoor het gat aan de kant van Unai Emery wordt gedicht en het doelsaldo in hun voordeel wordt omgedraaid. Red card for Mc Ginn (Aston Villa)

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery admitted he was “disappointed” with John McGinn’s straight red card for a crude challenge on Destiny Udogie but insisted he did not intend to injure the Tottenham defender.

Villa are set to be without captain McGinn for their next three Premier League matches following his 65th-minute dismissal in the top-four shootout, which could have a damaging impact on their season. With the home team 2-0 down after goals from James Maddison and Brennan Johnson, McGinn went in late on Udogie to spark confrontations between the players and coaching staff.

The Scotland international’s foul was clearly borne out of frustration and he was instantly shown the red card by referee Chris Kavanagh. Head coach Emery did at least defend the midfielder by insisting he did not intend to injure Udogie, in what was the first red card of his Villa career.
