Arbikie Gin a Truthful field experience

Arbikie Estate is a family-owned working farm perched on the east coast of Angus; here crop is king. We painstakingly plant, sow, tend & harvest the fields that make up Arbikie. We are craftsmen of the soil.

This is an estate profoundly shaped by its environment: the red sandstone-tinted soil, the powerful sea and the turbulent weather give Arbikie a character found nowhere else. And here, situated where land meets sea, sits our distillery – created from an ancient barn, it is a place with all the ingredients required to produce authentic spirits of the highest quality.

Kirsty’s Gin is named after our master distiller at Arbikie, Kirsty Black, who carefully chose local botanicals to showcase our unique landscape and surroundings.

The kelp, carline thistle and blaeberries represent the elements of ocean, rock & land that surround our Scottish east coast farmlands, creating a wonderfully creamy gin filled with the character of Arbikie’s Angus home.

Nàdar Gin

Nadar Gin Arbikie

Arbikie, the field to bottle distillery based on the East Coast of Scotland, has announced the arrival of its innovative, carbon-neutral gin, Nàdar. Meaning nature in Gaelic, Nàdar harnesses the power of nature and science to create the world’s first climate-positive gin made from peas and it’s now available from Inverarity Morton.

A revolutionary spirit for the drinks industry, with a carbon footprint of -1.54 kg CO2e per 700ml bottle, it is at the forefront of the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss – the biggest challenges humankind has ever faced.

Five years of research, through Master Distiller, Kirsty Black’s, PhD studentship between Abertay University and The James Hutton Institute, have cumulated in the production of Nàdar Gin, which avoids more carbon dioxide emissions than it creates.

This is achieved through the most innovative and surprising ingredient – the humble pea. Most gins are made from spirit distilled from cereals such as wheat, barley or maize. Growing peas means no synthetic nitrogen fertiliser is needed, and so its negative environmental impact on waterways, air and soils is avoided. Peas also benefit the ecosystem as a whole, improving soil quality and offsetting synthetic nitrogen fertiliser requirements of other crops, which follow peas in the crop rotation.

Black’s PhD at Abertay University and the James Hutton Institute is focused on exploring the potential of pulses such as peas and beans as an environmentally sustainable crop to the brewing and distilling industries.

She added: “Peas are a part of a unique set of plants known as legumes that are able to source nitrogen, which is critical for plant growth, from the air. This removes the need for synthetic nitrogen fertilisers and, therefore, avoids the negative environmental impact it’s production and use has on our waterways, air and soils.”
